How To Play Poker Vegas Style
Tips on Poker From A World Class Winner
By: Dwain Berlin
Here is a tip I found in the Las Vegas Visitors Guide, written by Annie Duke.
Avoid Showing Your Emotions
Don't show any emotion or you may give away too much. By looking at a spot on the table, open your mouth and think about breathing. A closed mouth can give away subtle smirks or other clues.
Luck and Odds Should Not Be Downplayed
Poker is a mathematical game and chances of winning are like a bell curve. You play better when you win because confidence will be boosted. Don't forget about luck and odds though. Some players play "lucky hands" which is counterproductive because they aren't playing the mathematical game.
Don't Bet Beyond Your Limit
Once you establish your bankroll, play within that limit so it stays within "fun boundaries" and has nothing to do with daily expenses. Professional poker players will play between 5% & 10% of their bankroll in any given game , and never any more. If you run out of cash, it's best to leave to avoid buying back in and trying to win it back.
Choosing Tournament or Cash Play
These two games are very different. Tournaments may seem intimidating for a beginner, but they can be less stressful. Tournaments are scheduled, usually for afternoons. You buy-in with a specific amount and if you lose, you're out. This style can help you focus on the game and not on the money. In cash games, you choose a limit and wait until there's an opening. You can walk away at any time and that makes it exciting but difficult, because that gives you less time to read your opponents.

In Addition To That
I came across an interesting tip on how to assess the value of a poker hand depending on how many players are at the table. It seems the fewer player at the poker table, the stronger your marginal hand can be.
Obviously you need a clear grasp of the weight of each hand relevant to all possible hands you could have. Then you need to have an intangible understanding of how the weight of each hand scales up or down relevant to the number of players at the table.
If that sounded like a bunch of mumbo-jumbo then take a look at this page on understanding different values of poker hands for a clearer understanding. It's a short 2 minute read, and will probably make more sense than my description has here.
